Breaking Free
We are going to be fine, he whispered, We can do this. - a ONE-MINUTE story
A car door slammed. She heard his footsteps on the gravel. Standing at the top of the stairs in the dark, her knees felt slightly unhinged. He was right on time. Buttoning her coat and checking the lock on the door behind her, she stepped down into the glare of the headlights with her suitcase. He came to her, took the bag silently and helped her up into the truck.
“We are going to be fine,” he whispered, as they headed north together. “We are going to be okay, you and I. We’ve got this.”
“Yes,” she said.
Yesterday they had gathered their iPads, laptops, smartphones — all of it, and carefully disabled each one, wiped them clean, smashed them. They won’t be needing them any more. They’ve chosen to break the addiction, to liberate themselves from the prison of staring mindlessly at screens, to end the thought-control, and begin their real lives.
Looking at the winding road ahead captured in the headlights, they feel the first faint tingle of freedom, the first new breath of fresh air. They believe that it can be done.
Quite ironic that I read this on my phone! Have to say I feel a twang of envy 😃
Can it be done?🤔
