Jolene, he thinks, shaking his head. Jolene! For God’s sake, what’s a normal man supposed to do with a girl like that? Those long bare legs in those cut off jeans — she’s calling attention to way more skin than she ought to, and she knows it. She’s heading back to the house to get us a couple more beers, her sweet little ass swaying like a hula dancer.
The rusty screen door bangs closed behind her like a halfhearted slap. In the branches overhead, the cicadas are so loud I cannot for the life of me form one clear thought, and it’s so goddamn hot I am on the verge of combustion. The dog whimpers and crawls under the porch for shade.
What have you got on your mind, girl? You with your green eyes the color of ferns and your bright red hair, like some sort of exotic fish bait. What is it you want from me this time, Jolene? Aw, doesn’t matter. Whatever it is you want, I’ll fucking give it to you, no doubt about that.
That reads like a country song, the way they used to make country songs. Or an Elmore Leonard novel.
