Thanks, Kate. Yes, the photo came first, then I dredged up an actual conversation I was part of a LONG time ago here in Santa Cruz. It is amazing that more of us were not permanently damaged...

Humans have found ways to numb themselves or alter their reality since paleolithic days. Other mammals have, too. Even if it only banging one's head on a cave wall or eating fermented berries...

Me, too, James Ron. How many friends did we lose in the late 1960s who thought they could quit any time...?

Thanks for emphasizing the obvious …. Most of us have demons that can have power …. If we let them. As someone with an addictive personality I am so fortunate to have resisted temptations over my life.

Thank you, Barrie. How many deluded souls begin with the idea that they "just like it a lot" but are not addicted. A sad story.

It sure could be. You seen the size of those "trente" paper cups people carry around? Coffee in one hand, cell phone in the other.... Maybe we need a couple of new versions of AA? Maybe CA and CPA? Nah.... no one would come.

Oh god, I just Googled to see the size. Thankfully, that is not much of a thing here. Starbucks is minimal in presence, with many local roasters thriving and serving far more sensibly-sized coffees.
