Running With The Big Dogs
An affectionate salute to a handful of Substack’s best and brightest.
I am not a Big Dog on Substack. I wouldn’t even dream of attaining Big Dog status, but I am definitely off the porch! For two years, I’ve been unleashed in the Substack dog-park, running with corgis, terriers, spaniels and other Small Dogs of like minds.
I write on Substack for the sheer joy of writing, hoping to find one person out there who likes my stories or who is moved by them in some way. I don’t seek status. It’s been my good fortune to have become part of a small pack of writers— really good writers with fewer than 1,000 subscribers. They’re writers who inspire me, who make me laugh, who can break my heart in an instant, and mend it just as quickly. They’re writers who scramble my brains with brand new thoughts and make me sigh with their elegant prose, whether it be fiction or essay or memoir. Today I want to specially recognize just a few of them.
If you’re a new reader or writer on the platform, and are not sure where to begin, here’s a starting list of writers, in no particular order, who are guaranteed to make you bark and howl. Careful — one of them bites.
