The Light
A line of light hovered in the fog just above the treetops. She pulled off the road, opened the window, and leaned her head out. There was no sound other than the sighing of leaves. She waited, watching, her breath suspended. The light didn’t move. She stepped out of the car, and leaving the key in place, the door wide open, the headlights on, she walked carefully through the trees to the clearing.
A single wide ray of amber light descended onto the grass, like an invitation. She looked back toward her car, hearing the soft ding, ding, ding from the dashboard calling her back. She thought of her long beautiful past, what she’d been, what she’d seen, whom she’d loved. She thought of her short future, and wasn’t keen on her next destination.
But options may appear out of nowhere. She walked boldly into the light and was taken.
Love it, it’s best when so much can be said in a shorter format!
The “ding ding” of the car got me. Great touch.
