Your Mom was a wonder. I'm sorry I didn't get to meet her....2000 miles distance can be a nuisance. I grew up in Chicago when most of the street was still empty of houses. They filled in by high school. My sister and I played in the big empty lot beside our house, climbing the big dirt hill. I"m glad to live in the country now.... just the opposite of your Mom's life. Another Kate.
We spent a lot of time outdoors, too. Mama NEVER knew where my brother and I would go. Mother's just trusted their kids to be smart in those days, and stay out of danger. She'd just say, "Be home by Dinner!" A different world.
Well, to tell you the truth, me too! I remember as a very young child listening to Big John and Sparky with their theme song of the Teddy Bears' Picnic. Also , the comic Weekly man who would read the "funny papers" aloud for us. Nice memory.
Such a beautiful post, Sharron. I loved reading about how - and, and who, and what with - Katy played.
And this has brought a tear to my eye, because isn't it exactly what Christmas is all about? "Every year at Christmas I would get the same cradle over and over again, but painted a new color and the dolls would all have new dresses that my mother made.” Just gorgeous.
Yes, exactly so, I think. She also told me that every Christmas all the kids got one ORANGE. Imagine -- the big holiday treat was an orange! It was the only one they had all year.
Maggie and Jiggs, Katzenjammer Kids, Archie, Brenda Starr, Steve Canyon, Pogo, Hi and Lois. Remember those? Pogo's subtle humor was over my childish head, but I grew to really love it as an adult who understood social commentary.
I'm glad she had some happy memories in between all her hardships.
Yes, me too. Thanks, Linda, for saying that.

I loved listening to the Lone Ranger on the radio and reading Nancy Drew mysteries.

Thank you for sharing your mon’s stories. You honor her well! 💗
Thank you for reading these family history tales, Jenise. I think I might have only three more episodes... oh no..
However many, I'm enjoying them very much!
Oh, I had forgotten about Big John and Sparky. And how I looked forward to reading the comings. Dick Tracy, Blondie, and Dagwood.

And then there were comic books.
