For any meal, start with onions and garlic, fried in real butter till translucent. THEN consider what else might be in the fridge. Onions and garlic are prime medicinal and preventive. Add at least one apple anytime "to keep the doctor away".

Now remind me, what time am I supposed to arrive for dinner? And how many times a week?

Great advice -- from a woman who has "lived" in three different centuries. My only time- traveling friend.

Excellent story continues. I'll bet you are enjoying writing these stories as we enjoy reading them.

This writing is not easy writing for me. I prefer travel and fiction. But I do feel a great satisfaction when each chapter is done. I promised her I would get it down, and I am doing it!

I did not realize that. Your love comes through with your writing about her. Good for you for keeping your word to her.

I just love these home remedies! My mother followed the salt water gargle technique....darn it, she didn't use the cognac treatment!

No mine neither, but I would be more prone to add the cognac now. Nothing against using TWO remedies, is there?

So great, Sharron! I'm really enjoying these posts.

This line 'A shot of hard liquor is considered to be a fine cure for an upset stomach, too' reminds me of when I had a dreadful stomach travelling with my dad. His colleague gave me a glass of something, told me to drink it and go to sleep, and that when I woke up I'd be better. He was absolutely right - my stomach was absolutely fine. What had the drink been? Equal measures of port and brandy, in a full glass!

Well! So there you are! So...um... you still relying on that prescription from the Divine Physician?

and many of those old remedies were safer than the ones we have today.

I imagine you are right, but I would be more likely to hedge my bets with a trip to a doctor as well. Nothing to say you can't do both. Thanks Janice

Ooohhh, I really like this piece! These home remedies have some ring of truth to them, so I want to keep the list. I was going to ask if you ever did any of them yourself...

Mama made us gargle with salt water for a sore throat, but she didn't really believe in all the other folk remedies. Thank goodness.

Dinner is whenever anybody is hungry. Arrive before noon. 7 days. We'll peel and chop onions together. I'll put you to work spinning wool. We can do a dye pot while the onions heat up. 2000 miles between us??? DANG. Not looking too good to happen, but yer invited permanently anyway.

Well, I don't know. If Santa Cruz is swallowed by the sea, I will have to renegotiate with you on room and board, Kate.
