She’d called at 1:00 in the morning, waking him from a restless sleep.
“I need you,” she’d whispered.
“What’s up?”
“I just really need you, baby. Please come now.”

His footfalls echo through the sleeping streets, as he hurries the long blocks to her apartment.
She needs him, that’s all he knows. Even though they’d separated six years ago, he’s still the man she calls on, and he always shows up.
Climbing the steps, he takes her key from his pocket and bursts through the door. It’s dead quiet.
He heads toward the back room and calls out, “Mom?”’
