...determine how they sort themselves... the humans haven't figured that out yet either.

I'm enjoying this story )))

If you are an outsider, it is hard to interpret what you are looking at. Reena is keeping an open mind, except for that dog-eating business. Thanks for reading her story, Kate!

Self-strangulation! Hah! Males. And females on spiked heels. Hah! Everyone tethered. Oh my! Such captivity as seen from afar, without cultural precedents.

How does this observer determine which are males and which are females? And the mixes!

Wondering when CATS will come into the picture, since dogs are leading the humans who are enslaved to picking up their poop and then perhaps EATING something akin to their poop???

Oh so many questions this wondrous alien brings up! ( your avatar?)

How DOES she tell the males from the females? Great question, Jill. There are so many shades of gray these days, she would have to get their clothes off to be sure! ha ha ha. I'll tell you, though, I myself look around at my small world and have no idea what is going on sometimes. I feel as alien as Reena.

As do I! This morning I met a man walking and there were simply two of us alone on a trail, older folks that we are. He was intrigued with my trying to help him through his grieving being newly widowered ( is that a word?) and gave me his phone number to text him--unfortunately it was a landlilne! And it didn't go through! So two people who trust one another and are loving the connection as a direct connection, and yet... and yet...

DAMN! A missed opportunity. He may be on the same trail tomorrow…

But I WON'T be--I'm volunteering for something all day. My contention is that this should have been an easy trusting thing, two non-aliens, and bother older adults....who knows? I will reconnect somehow

Let me know.

Once upon a time, outworld cultures could monitor TV broadcasts. Now they have to sign up for cable or Internet. The golden age of extraterrestrial anthropology is over. <sigh>

OMG You are right! ha ha ha! That old Xfinity and Amazon won't let you in without capturing all your data and quite a bit of cash. Thanks for reading my social commentary / silly stuff, Jack.

A great start to my Saturday…. Maybe Reena could explore Washington DC with her unique perspective….

Oh Wade! I myself have no idea about what is going on in Washington. A total debacle, a three-ring circus. If Reena were to observe it, she would immediately head back to her planet and write us off. "Let's just move on, guys. This place is hopeless."

How odd we humans are. I'm looking forward to more of Reena's studies on the rankings of the human social structure. Such a good job on this story, Sharron!

Oh! Thank you, Wade. Such a gorgeous winter morning in Santa Cruz. Let's get on out there and do somebody some good!

I am reminded of Wayne Dyer's book Gifts From Eyekis. Your article provides a much more in-depth view of the human race and how it might look from the perspectives of other worlds. I'm loving it.

I will check it out, Janice. Thank you.

“Dogs are the dominant species, when paired with humans.” I got such a kick out of that observation….it is absolutely true! I’ve seen some people who pay more attention to their dogs, than they do their children! We are, indeed, a strange species, and don’t even get me started on the “leaders” in this corner of the planet!! This was an enjoyable read, Sharron! Can’t wait to read the Reena’s next discovery in Man Hat Ten!”

Er... next discovery.? Part 3?.. well... hmm...okay then

I am truly enjoying this series of short stories. Its so interesting wondering what an alien life form must think of us and our habits, customs, and self expression.

Thank you Kym, for coming back to read part two!

Dogs do run the show. More fun observations from Reena. You think like an extraterrestrial, Sharron. I'm waiting for her reaction to the pairing up thing. Is that the topic for part 3?

Part 3? Am I writing a part 3? I guess I am!

Well of course the dogs are in charge. Does any earthling dispute this? And as for the noose-like knots, I swore off them many years ago. Now, if you could just enlighten me on this mating ritual thingy in part 3, that would be great. Really enjoyed this, Sharron. Hoping for another chapter.

Reena's interpretations are opening new perceptions of all these things for me. And the humor pulls me along with each observation she reports. I am loving this.

What a strange planet and society we live in here . . . and the males wear nooses around their necks

Expand full comment

No wonder they can be so aggressive and stressed! I think men should wear togas and nothing under them. Not even underwear. I'll bet temperament and outlook would change overnight.
